Every employee shall arrange that work in a working area is carried out in a manner that does
not endanger the safety or health of any person employed in the work or in connection therewith.
No person shall use any working area, structure, machinery or equipment for any purpose
other than the purpose for which it is intended to be used.
No person shall use any structure, machinery or equipment that has been reassembled after
being dismantled, in whole or in part, until it has been examined by a qualified person on
board and found to be in a safe condition.
No person shall tamper with, or make ineffective, any safeguard or safety device that is intended to maintain the safe condition of any working area, structure, machinery or equipment. Defects shall be reported and repaired immediately.
No person shall cause an emergency exit to be obstructed or otherwise made ineffective. All
fire doors shall be able to be closed at any time without delay.
Any person who observes in a working area an unsafe condition or situation shall immediately
report that condition or situation to the person in charge of the working area. The work shall
then be stopped immediately and it is only allowed to continue after formal assessment and
approval of responsible officer in charge. If the defect cannot be handled by the crew the
Master shall inform the company and require assistance in written.
In an emergency case any person may immediately take whatever measures are necessary to
prevent loss of human life or injury to persons.
Any person who becomes aware of an accident, injury or near miss shall immediately report
it to the relevant Department or directly to a qualified person in the vicinity.
No person shall be permitted in any working area whose ability to work is, in the opinion of
the person in charge of the area, impaired by alcohol or a drug.
Every person in charge of a working area that is in darkness or, in which a dimly lighted condition exists, and no proper illumination can be provided, shall ensure that portable lights are
provided to any person required to enter that working area.
No person shall manually lift/carry or require any other person to manually lift/carry a weight
that is likely to jeopardize the health or safety of any person.
General Advice to Seafarers
Seafarers are reminded to take care when they move over the ship and to do so according to
basic seamanship. The “MCA-Code of Safe Working Practice” shall be considered as a mandatory guideline and its advice is to be followed as far as practicable. The code shall be provided
to all seafarers on request.
