​Working Aloft and Over the Side

No working aloft shall be allowed unless a written permit is issued prior the work starts.

A general risk assessment shall be available for different situations and shall be reviewed and

adjusted periodically.

Working aloft is any kind of work in a height of more than 2m above the floor.

Every person who is required to work on a stage, mast ladder or bosun chair and man basket

at a height bigger than 2m shall wear a safety harness fitted with a shock absorber.

Every vessel shall have at least two of these devices on board.

These devices must be checked regularly acc. to the Makers

Instructions. Same shall be available on board.

Each vessel shall be equipped at least with two (2) safety harness.

SAFETY NOTE: Safety belts are not allowed for working aloft and may only be used to avoid

stumbling or falling overboard during pilot transfer

The responsible officer shall duly consider whether it is necessary to have one assistant stand

by.

Further guidance as found in the “MCA-Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen"

or any other guideline on Occupational Health and Safety are to be observed.
