Anchoring, Mooring and Towing

A proper risk assessment shall be available on board for anchoring, mooring or towing operations. A proper communication between the different stations shall be ensured and tested

prior the operation starts.

All lines shall be arranged and fastened as per the vessels mooring arrangement plans. Nevertheless, good seamanship and best practice shall also be considered.

If the winches are fitted with Auto Tension Function (ATF) this shall be used as far as practicable. If the ATF cannot be used because the function will endanger the cargo operation special

attention shall be paid by the watchmen. In anyway lines shall not be laid on the windlass

capsules but should be fixed on the bollard. All bollards and windlass capsules shall be marked

with signal colors/stripes.

The SWL of each shipboard fitting must be marked by weld bead or equivalent on the deck

fitting intended for towing acc. to the emergency towing booklet.

Any operation is to be supervised by either a responsible Nautical Officer or an experienced

seaman appointed by the Master.

All involved personnel shall be equipped with proper means of communication. Communication lines and orders shall be defined by the Master and trained periodically.

Person in charge maintaining continuous radio contact with the bridge until mooring operations are declared completed by the Master.

Proper documentation about the maneuver must be entered in the respective Logbooks/

Bell Book.

All operation and handling shall be confirmed by the Master especially during towing or handling with tugboats. While the ship is moored the Officer on Watch is responsible for the frequent check of the proper mooring of the vessel. He may delegate this task to a well briefed

and trained deck watch man.

Deck marking/ Hatch cover marking

To provide a visual aid to personal working on deck and to

avoid falling down due to missing steps the hatch covers

must be marked as per below requirements. The procedure

is mandatory for ships with cargo cranes but may be

applicable for other ships in the fleet as well.

Hatch cover markings dimensions:

1. Two lines around the hatch cover

2. Thickness of lines 10-12 cm

3. Distance between lines 100-120 cm

4. Length of squares 100-120 cm
