Joygun Islam is the mother of two girls, Nurnahar, 7, and Sonia, 2. Her family lives in northern Bangladesh, on a river island which is prone to severe flooding every year. Dirty flood water stays for weeks on end, knee-high in people’s homes. Daily life becomes a battle. Food is scarce, and meals are basic. Moving around – to get support from a neighbour or food for children – becomes almost impossible.Joygun is desperate to protect her family from these devastating floods. It doesn’t take much — she just needs a little lift to get started. And that’s why Oxfam is helping her, and many other women farmers here, to grow and sell more chillies. With the money she earns, she can buy more nutritious meals for her children, save dried food to eat during the floods and build a stronger home to withstand storms. Use this in your classroom:
