HD +b | ORBIT
About the title +bAn «orbit» is a path described by one body in its revolution about another (as by the earth about the sun or by an electron about an atomic nucleus). In logic and mathematics, «or» is the operator of disjunction. The logical connective that represents this operator is typically written as ∨ or +.A «bit» is the maximum amount of information that can be conveyed by a binary digit. The symbol for binary digit is either simply bit or lowercase b.Orbit — an AR enhanced planetary iconCommon depictions of Earth which we see in daily news and navigational maps are based on the Mercator projection displaying distorted and incorrect proportions of Earth's landmasses. Such maps are useful for navigation but inappropriate for the promotion of planetary concepts. Traditional world maps rather reinforce the elements that separate humanity and fail to highlight the patterns emerging from the evolving and accelerating process of globalization. The Dymaxion Projection Map is the only flat representation of the entire surface of the Earth, that reveals our planet as one continent in one ocean, without any obvious distortions of the shapes and sizes of the land areas, and without splitting any continents. It was developed in the year 1943 by Richard Buckminster Fuller. who «by 1954, after working on the map for several decades,» finally realized a «satisfactory deck plan for Spaceship Earth.»Our work Orbit shows this world map built from multiple layers of over 40000 sugar cubes. Using sugar cubes as pixels, emphasizes the intimate relationship between information, energy, resources and the resulting impact on nature. In times of peace, sugar is being used as a food source and a potentially abundant regenerative source of energy. Nevertheless, in times of war, sugar is the first item to be rationed as a building block for making conventional explosives. That being said, we should be happy as long as we are supplied with sugar, as it clearly means that we are living in peace. In our first world model, we stage the most extreme power released by mankind: the sequence of all nuclear explosions from the year 1945 until today. The underlying database was established from multiple scientific resources. The impact of over 2000 nuclear explosions on the atmospheric, aquatic, and underground environments can be clearly observed. The amount of energy released is indicated by circles at the specific locations of detonation. Animated light pulses illuminate the translucent sugar cubes from below. Animated continental and oceanic patterns are projected onto the white sugar cubes from above. Our current state of research combines the physical with the virtual world: Augmented Reality overlays with head mounted displays and mobile devices immerse the audience into extra layers of information and knowledge.Orbit can visualize a wide range of world models such as: financial flows, trade currents, news, population distribution, regenerative projects, energy consumption and political power. An ideal case for combining physical sculpture with virtual overlays, addressing education and insight.Orbit is an enhanced planetary icon, reinforcing the elements that unite humanity.
